Little Justice was born with a ruptured bladder. Unfortunately it is not something you can see until about 3-5 days of age. He horribly ill when I got home from work and he was rushed into emergency surgery on Thursday night. I am thrilled to announce that he is recovering nicely and should be back in the barn by Monday afternoon. I think it's going to be "fun" trying to keep him quiet and stalled for 3 weeks!!! I will keep you all posted! He's quite the little trooper!!

I just want to clarify to anyone that reads this....the problem with the ruptured bladder has nothing to do with his breeding. It is a 2 in 100 chance that a COLT has a full bladder when passing through the birth canal which causes the rupture. Lori has been the most wonderful person through this entire, awful experience. Neither one of us had ever heard of this abnormality (a small quote in my foaling book) until we were faced with it. I never felt alone with Lori there to talk to throughout the process. Thank you Lori for really caring about the wonderful animals you breed. I will never forget your kindness! Stormy

You are SOOOO welcome Stormy! Just like you I care about all animals. You are very sweet to post such kind words and to clarify that what happened is not any type of genetic defect. It just sometimes happens due to foals being born with full bladders. Colts are more likely to suffer this due to longer urethra's. When the mare has contractions if the bladder is full enough and pressure is put on the urethra if the fluid goes back up into the bladder it can cause a small tear. It's something that is hard to notice for the first 48 hours our so, but once the abdomen starts filling up then the foals start getting very sick quickly. I commend you Stormy for keeping such a watchful eye over your colt and catching it so quickly and also for being willing to help him. I know there are quite a few people out there who probably wouldn't make that choice. It would be tough not to when they have their whole life ahead of them.

Lori, I know that not everyone has $5000-$6000 to spend on the surgery of a colt they have only known for a few days. However, although I am an extremely honest person, I am afraid I would beg, borrow or steal to get the funds if I needed too. The way I see it is, if I didn't have the time or money to take care of my animals, even in an emergency, then I should not have them. I loved him from the moment he was conceived. This colt will never be for sale and will never want for anything. Of course, he will also NOT be a spoiled brat! LOL! If I had not chosen to save Jusice's life, I think I would never have gotten over that decision for the rest of my life. When I asked my best friend "Why is it always MY animals that have deadly sicknesses? (My dog and my pony have HUGE problems) She replied simply, " Because God knows that you love them and will take care of them and that's why he gives you the sick ones" It was a profound statement and I believe every word now. I will post his updates here so that you too, can love him like I do!!!! Thank you Lori and I would recommend you as a breeder to anyone I know looking for a beautiful paint!

They are both home and safe now. They have to be stalled for 3 weeks before being turned out into a small paddock. Boy howdy is that little guy full of it!! Neither one of them are happy about being in the stall...especially since Holly is in heat! She has already taught Justice the only bad vice she has......PAWING THE STALL FLOOR!! Good thing I invested in rubber mats!! Anyway, tomorrow I give him his last shot and maybe he'll calm down after that. I'm going to start picking up his feet today...WISH ME LUCK!! ;D

Such GREAT news Stormy.... I'm so glad they are home again. You are going to have a challenge trying to keep him quiet in a stall for 3 weeks aren't you? The last shot must be behind you now... what a relief. How did picking up his feet go? Well, I'm out the door running. I'm headed back over to camp with my daughter. I was there most of the day (and feel like most of the night) yesterday. She was in her element yesterday when they went horseback riding. They went on a trail ride and the kids all had a great time. I'll share some pics later. I stayed until it was bedtime last night only to find out when I arrived at the ferry at 8:50, there wasn't another ferry leaving for Seattle until 11:05.... ugh. So, I'm not going to be back over there as early as I had hoped. Didn't get home until 12:30 or so. Thank you keeping us updated on Justice.... love hearing about your horses. Have a great day! Lori

Justice is doing GREAT! He is growing by the minute!! Except a few places that his fur hasn't quite grown back yet, you can't even tell anything was ever wrong. He's a great little guy! Now I'm not sure where I'm going to take my mare when he's ready to be weaned! I'm a little stressed about that part, but trust me, we've already been through the worst!!! Lori, I'll send you new pic I took today!! ;D
