I tell you that we lost our beloved Lacy early this morning to postpartum colic. Had the vet out twice yesterday, gave her pain meds. She really didn't feel anything out of place and she had manure... she sounded very gassy. Last night we decided it was best to take her into the clinic. Whereas before I had heard sometimes a trailer ride works miracles on a horse... this time I think it sent her over the edge. I got home at 1:00 this morning, the vet called a 2:25 to tell me, her pain was getting out of control and he felt it was best to put her down. I couldn't let my girl suffer, so I told him to put her down. I couldn't sleep all night and cried so much my head felt like it was going to explode! I found a possible nurse mare... hopefully she will work out. In the meantime Bella has started to drink milk replaced from a bucket.
Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Lori, Our hearts and thoughts are with you right now. Please let me know if you need anything or if the nurse mare doesn't work out, my mother-in-law found one in Port Townsend but there is a monthly fee (is that normal?). Give that little one lots of hugs for us and remember to take time for yourself as well, you deserve it!

Thank you Amanda and Cindy.... tonight I've had a really hard time again. Found myself looking at pictures and found the tears and pain all over again. I have to stay focused on the gift that Lacy gave me before leaving us. The filly is doing fairly well.... considering. We did find a nurse mare to try. She will let Bella nurse but so far only while restrained. I go out every 2 hours, take the mare into the foaling stall with Bella, let Bella nurse.... then put nurse mare back in the stall next to her (lowered the wall so they can have contact). Then supplement Bella with the milk replacer out of a bucket. She is doing pretty good overall.
