Yeah, I guess they really do show more than the first batch you posted! Poor thing! As for the way she acted when she was fed - not that I know that much about horses - considering the neglect she has obviously suffered, it wouldn't surprise me if she was merely being protective of her food. You probably know this, but smaller, more frequent meals would be the best way to go with her at first. Keep us posted on her progress.

Lori, That poor mare! The rain rot looks very bad. Have you been able to get any scabs off? Are you having the vet out to check her out? I would also put her on an antibiotic because that rain rot is basically an infection and that will contribute a lot to her weight gain. Are you able to bathe her? She really needs it and more than once! De worm her with panacur now and again in a week. Its one of the mild wormers so if shes really infested it wont shock her system too bad. Then after aonther month you can do strongid and then the next month I'd do zimecterin Gold. Once shes feeling a little better you shoucld get her teeth done also, I bet that will help with putting on weight. Its good you have until June, the foal should be ok. I cant wait to see the progress! Lisa Happe

OMG. She does look absolutely awful to say the least. I am still so happy she has found you and your heart is so big. She sure is going to need you now. I don't understand how people can do that to any animal or any human.

Hi Lisa,
I just found out about her on Thursday and picked her up yesterday (Sat.), I need to call and schedule a vet appt. It is frigid cold her right now so I think a bath is going to have to wait until its a tad bit warmer. I haven't started trying to get scabs off yet. I just want to give her a little time to realize we are here to help her. And then little by little I will start working on it.
Thank you so much for the advice especially the worming advice. I did know that in her condition it could be harmful so it really is appreciated.

Ok Lori I gotta ask what you consider frigid there because I see what looks like green grass in the pics ;D Here in MN we woke up to 20 below saturday morning and that was mean temps NOT windchill!! there were windchills in the 60 below range in MN friday might and saturday morning, UGH! But you definately dont want to wash her unless its pretty decent weather so you dont stress her too much. Will you be able to wash her with warm water? Cold would probably be too much of a shock for her too, poor baby. Heres an idea for you if you cant wash her for a while. Ask your vet to mix some dexamethasone into a tub of furcin ointment. slather that on the scabby areas several times a day. I am not exactly sure what the dexamethasone adds but here we use it with great success on proud flesh and recently Dolly had that scratches fungus on her heels and it really clearedt hat up and took most of the swelling out ofher pasterns. Plus the furucin will soften those scabs up. Start with the plain furicin until you can get the dex mixture from your vet. She will get greasy and grimey from the furicin but getting those scabs off is the first step in healing her. Dyna did not have anywhere near that extent of rain rot and even with what she did have her poor back was warm to the touch. I bet that poor mares back is just on fire! How is she eating? I would keep grass hay in front of her at all times and slowly build up the senior feed. Add some empower for extra fat if you can get that too. I'll bet shes feeling better already just knowing that someone DOES care about her! Lisa Happe

Good morning, She´s even worse than a body condition three by light. Wow, we all are glad you got her out of there. I have one question: Are there other horses where she came from? Because if there are it´s definitely a case that is needing you to document everything we see on this horse closely and report it. No animal that depends on the care of people should need to suffer through it. Whoever had her should not be allowed to have other horses in my opinion. Best of luck, Emma

Poor girl, she looks like my first horse that I couldnt say NO too. So I bought him. It took a while to get weight on him but once started it flew by. I am going to look in my barn, I have a shampoo that worked wonders on rain rot and get the name for you (too early to go out yet). I certainly hope that the previous owners got fined for this condition. I was an SPCA agent for a few years and ran across a few cases like this. Heart breaking to say the least. The SPCA was a great volunteer job, however, I left it as I didnt like the politics involved. Regardless, if an owner had a horse in this condition, fines and sometimes jail time was the outcome. I do hope that when people see animals in need they call their local SPCA - it is very confidential - your name will never be given out. I call them as I see fit as well. Need to call on my friend that leases her farm - the horses there have NO shelter in this freezing weather. Make the call its worth it and you'll feel better. Lori, good luck with Sissy and please keep us posted. Hugs to all .

Ok went out to feed and get the name of the shampoo. Made by Healthy Haircare, Derma Clean Shampoo. Of course, I hope the weather warms up for you - it certainly is cold here in NJ.
